Partners and Programs

Resources at Furman:

Shi Center for Sustainability

Student Fellowships - The Shi Center's student fellowships are a main way in which Furman currently partners with community organizations.  Student fellows work 400 hours with a community organization on projects focused on sustainability.

Faculty Fellowships - The Shi Center's faculty research fellowships fund 3-6 faculty members from departments across campus for research that relates sustainability to their own disciplines.  Currently, the program funds six faculty fellows, four of which are explicitly focusing on Furman's campus or the upstate.

Affiliate Faculty members - The Shi Center's Affiliate Faculty program brings together faculty members across all disciplines on Furman's campus to explore sustainability topics.  We anticipate leaning heavily on our Affiliate Faculty members as Greenville Geographic unfolds.

Farming and Food Systems Research - This new initiative at Furman will study farming and food systems in the upstate of South Carolina.

Community Organizations:

Greenville Forward Six years ago, Vision 2025 was created to be the plan that would move Greenville County into the next generation and make the county one of the most liveable in the country. The plan is bold, aggressive, and comprehensive.  To convert our dreams into reality, and to ensure that Vision 2025 goals are achieved, Greenville Forward was created as the primary shepherd, facilitator, and catalyst for the Vision. The mission is to enhance the quality of life for greater Greenville by engaging citizens in continually updating, promoting, and facilitating a community vision for 2025 and beyond.

Upstate Forever - the Upstate's primary conservation organization.  The mission is to Promote sensible growth and protect special places in the Upstate region of South Carolina.

Lake Conestee Nature Park - 400 acres of natural habitat 6 miles south of downtown Greenville on the Reedy River.  This is a potential first case study for our efforts in Greenville.
